Facebook New Spam Filter Notification on Captico Page

The buzz is out about Facebook‘s new SPAM filter feature on Pages, and while its not visible to everyone yet, it does seem to be rolling out quickly. “Facebook is now helping Page admins ensure that the most valuable content posted by users on their Page wall is more visible to anyone viewing the Page. We are now offering automatic content filtering on Page walls that will ensure that posts soliciting spam are removed from public view as well as ensure that posts containing good content remain more visible.” (from Facebook)

Facebook New Spam Filter LocationWhen a Post to your Page Wall is marked as SPAM, it is “hidden” from visitors to your page (but is still visible to the poster and his/her friends). As an Admin of the Page, you can view any SPAM posts by clicking on this new SPAM filter at the top of your page.

As an Admin of a Page, you can manually mark/unmark any post as SPAM.

Facebook Mark As SPAMor Facebook Unmark As Spam

The question some may ask is, why do we need this when we could just Remove a Post all together already? Well, Spam is different than an unwanted post. If a post is offensive or inappropriate or will accidentally ruin a surprise birthday party, you may want it removed – you can do this by hovering over the post and clicking “Remove Post…”. But those offenses don’t qualify a Post as Spam. The new Spam filter will allow Page Admins to clearly mark a post as Spam so that users who Spam can be tracked, blocked, and banned. (Something I wish Twitter was better at.) In order for this system to work, PLEASE mark Spam as SPAM and Remove (if you must) offensive posts.

  1. I think this new automatic SPAM filter may have broken connectivity between 3rd party Apps and the ability to post to Facebook Pages through them… Check out this notice from Hootsuite:

A fix is scheduled to go out in today’s push. Stay tuned.
Update: As of October 28 @ 11:10AM PST, Facebook is aware of the problem and continues to work on (and track) the bug.

To confirm, the problem is a bug related to Facebook API’s ability for Pages to communicate with third party services such as HootSuite. This is why some users are unable to post status updates to their Page. Once Facebook Bug Track confirms this is fixed, Page integration should return to HootSuite.

We are confident that Facebook is actively working on a fix, and we eagerly await a speedy resolution.

Background: On Wednesday, October 27, Facebook released an update to their Facebook Pages system. This update introduced a bug in their API that would prevent users of third party Facebook applications from posting to their pages. Other developers report the same issue. In other words, this matter is not HootSuite-specific; similar apps report similar problems.

Since then, some users have not been able to send messages to their Pages. Some users report reconnecting their Pages resolves this problem for them, but this is not a catch-all solution.

This is just another headache that gives admins less control over the page because the feature seems to be open to everyone! Yes “I” want to be able to mark something as spam I don’t what the people on my page just viewing it to be able to do that just because they disagree with a user or my page they could mark anything as spam. How do I disable this to people who can view the page but are not admin? This is insanity they have reverse engineered the problem of spam and left us with both the original problem and a counter problem? Really?… come on really?

  3. Cat, I beg to differ… and perhaps I poorly explained it, but not just any user has control. The feature is for official pages (not profile pages) and only the admins can manually mark or unmark a comment as spam. The rest is “automatically” filtered by Facebook itself.

But thanks for taking the time to comment! And I’d love to help in any way I can if you have questions!

On my page, I’ve got the option to “Mark as Spam” or “Report Abuse”, but no option to simply remove it. I just want to remove a duplicate. Am I missing something, or did they just make this completely useless for maintenance?

Doh! Never mind, I wasn’t logged in to Facebook.
