Are you a an online advocacy guru, a fundraiser, or grassroots organizer? Perhaps you manage a communications team and want to dive into social media but you’re a little old school. This event is for you! We invite nonprofit staff and do-gooder consultants from a diverse array of fields to come join us at NonProfit 2.0. This includes people who work in:

Online Advocacy and Outreach

Grassroots Organizing

Social Media

Fundraising

Communications

Nonprofit Technology

Nonprofit Consulting

Public Affairs

Programming

What is an unConference?

Following the keynote sessions – at 10:30 AM we start with a blank wall and, in less than an hour, with a facilitator guiding the process attendees create a full day, multi-track conference agenda that is relevant and inspiring to everyone in the room. All are welcome to put forward presentations or propose conversations that you would like to have with others and:

questions you want answered

information you want to share/present

a project you would like help on

As people register we will be posting proposed topics on our wiki.

What happens During Sessions?*

As sessions happen people volunteer to document the outcomes on a wiki (The notes of what was said is even better). Photos of any whiteboards are also important along with any slides that were presented.

End of the Day

At the end of the day everyone gathers in one place to share highlights of the day.

Why Charge?

The $45 fee covers event costs. While leading the organization of NonProfit 2.0 as a way to educate the local nonprofit community on social media and contributing some financial resources, the founders do not want to go in debt on the community’s behalf. Secondarily, PodCamp Boston 2008 received more than 1000 registrants and only a few hundred showed up. The resulting financial loss was significant. We want people to commit to their registration, and there is no better way than to charge a cover. The event is significantly cheaper than most events at this cost, and folks will get a big bang for their buck.

Please note that net proceeds will be donated to a local charity. Catering will be provided by DC Central Kitchen.

Refund Policy: Tickets are refundable until May 15, 2011.

Sponsored By: Tech Cocktail has been hosting mixer events and writing about technology start-ups and entrepreneurs across the country since 2006. Tech Cocktail is a media company focused on better connecting, educating and amplifying the start-up technology community and showcasing the latest tech innovations. They are aimed at helping build and strengthen local tech start-up communities both online and off.

I stopped by the mixer event last night to see what it was all about. I was greeted by nice people, 2 drink tickets, a nametag, and a free and extremely comfortable new t-shirt (that I wore to bed last night). The t-shirt could have used some design help though, as I have no idea what was the company name and what was the tagline… Regardless, I love it and will wear it – so comfy and fit perfectly.

I think this event is a great place for companies to showcase new products or new start ups. With nothing to do but network, I think most people there made the rounds to each of the “booths” to see who was there and what was up. Drink tickets are awesome of course, though I didn’t immediately know what they were for when I was handed them… (thought maybe a raffle?)

I ran into some good folks that I knew from previous events and on Twitter and I love how friendly and smart the DC social media community is. (Special shout outs to Brian Dresher, Jill Foster, Geoff Livingston and Tod Plotkin!)

Also, Shashi Bellamkonda from Network Solutions wants you to go to the website after 5pm on friday for a fun surprise. I’m intrigued, are you?

One of the more interesting startups showcased at Tech Cocktail was PhantomALERT. This app can be downloaded to your GPS or smartphone and alerts you when speed traps, traffic cameras, and other driving hazards may be coming up. It is community driven, so they want you to contribute hazards when you approach them as well. Having seen it in action, its simple to report (a swipe of the finger on your screen) and operates in real time. Think of it as a high tech “flashing your lights at opposing traffic when you pass a speed trap”. PhantomALERT is compatible with most GPS and SmartPhone devices including: Garmin, TomTom, Magellan, iPhone, Android, and Blackberry. Ray from PhantomALERT even gave me a free month of access to the service and I can’t wait to try it out.

Other startups included thestrEATS (a DC Food Truck tracker), SURC (they’ll turn your phone into a universal remote), Shapea (an idea sandbox), PoshBrood (a family friendly travel directory) and more…

Captico mates on a trip down to DC to attend the What’s Next DC? Conference. Overall the event was a good one – my applause to Green Buzz Agency and others who helped put the event together.

Overall I had my likes and my dislikes for this year’s events as well as my hopes for What’s Next 2012:

Liked:

Niche discussions – it was good to share thoughts, questions and solutions with other attendees.

Speakers hung around after their presentations for Q&A and from what I saw the presenters appeared to be very personable.

Dislikes:

Q&A was separate from the presentation. I don’t know about you but I learn as much from Q&A as I do from the presentation itself.

Too many presentations in too little time. There were some presentations that could have gone deeper not to mention the tight schedule made it hard to discuss any of the presentations with a neighbor.

Hopes for What’s Next DC 2012:

It would be really cool to have the niche discussions follow the presentations a bit more closely. For example Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz fame could give his presentations and answer questions (for the entire audience). Then after his session, he could have led a discussion on SEO. This flow could be scheduled in groups of three – three short presentations with time for Q&A for an hour followed by 30 minutes of networking or one of three niche discussions based on the earlier presentations.

Overall, a good experience and congrats to all who played a hand in What’s Next DC and be sure to look out for the Captico team at other DMV events. (If you know of any events worth attending, share them below and maybe we’ll see you there.)

Conference organizers say:

“There are no sales commercials masquerading as presentations here, or sleepy Q & A sessions where only 1 of 8 questions apply to your business. What’s Next DC is about brainstorming, case studies, energy, networking, strategy and – best of all – personalized solutions to your company’s most important challenges.

How will we accomplish this? By jamming as much information into the day as possible. We’ll have floating experts in a variety of fields available, so if you hear something you like and want to bounce ideas around right there on the spot, you can! We’ve scheduled group brainstorming/strategy sessions and niche learning sessions where you can discuss your areas of interest and expertise. There will also be an area dedicated solely to networking all day long.

This is not just a conference, it is an experience. Come prepared and energized to learn and share with other Marketing, Public Relations, Advertising, and Communication Professionals!”

Well if that doesn’t wake you out of your boring conference malaise, I don’t know what will!
